The Construction Project: How Mentorship Works

When preparing a project to build, we are filled with anticipation regarding the vision of the completed project, the unknown adventures, opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Commonly, we seek out someone to talk to who has constructed a similar project before - someone who is willing to share their experiences, warn us of hidden dangers along the path and provide resources to assure the project goes well. This is a metaphor for the Mentor.

In many ways, the building of a career and relationship within an organization is a construction project. We recognize the gift of Mentors who help people along the way.

Mentoring is all about planning, constructing and completing a learning and development process. It is:

•  a professional relationship based on trust and confidence

•  a protected relationship in which learning and development can occur

•  an intense work relationship between seniors and juniors, or colleagues of     the organization.
